After years of competing, I finally got it through my head that I SHOULD be winning. This time I paddled like the favorite and won with a comfortable, second-and-a-half margin over Jason Beakes, several times Great Falls Race winner. Jason won the long boat category (I was 3rd and out of control in the Wavesport Exel).
The Jackson Kayak Hero felt like just the right volume: I could use the edges, my arms weren’t obstructed by the boat, and I enjoyed the softest landings off the waterfalls. Thanks to Jim Buley (Valley Mill Boats) for lending me the boat while mine was still in transit.
I also finished 2nd in the Pro Freestyle -- a disappointment considering that I missed my big loops that I’d done so well in practice. Oh well. Next year...
